So you finally bit the bullet and put together a website. It’s very well designed, you believe, and has a lot of helpful information that a visitor would enjoy. You’re so happy with it you don’t think anything needs to be changed or done at all. And yet, you aren’t getting a whole lot of hits on the website. Why is this? Why isn’t anybody coming to see it? Backlinking, to put it in understandable terms, refers to when another website provides a clickable link to your own website; the more people who link to you, the more visible your site to the search engines and thus better ranked. This is especially crucial if you deal with a subject that is competitive such as car insurance quotes or mortgages; unless you get to work on building backlinks you’ll remain buried deep in the search results, rarely or never to be found online.

But just because a few websites backlink to you, it doesn’t mean that you should sit back and collect your cash, figuring that you have done enough. Even if you are ranking well now, there’s always someone else on your heels looking to take over your spot. Continue to provide ways for people to find you. Mention your website in forums and in personal profiles you might create at another social networking site. Ask people if they would like to do a link exchange. The list goes on and on, and it’s up to you to bring up your page rank; just keep trying and working at it. It will all be worth it in the end.
