Link Building Do’s and Don’ts

Every day we get questions from BMR users asking us for tips on how to best utilize our service. Over the last two years, we have seen thousands of customers get great results when using the BMR network as part of their linkbuilding strategy. But BMR is a tool and and it’s effectiveness, in large part, relies on the person who is using it.

To that end, we are going to be greatly increasing the depth of our knowledge base and ramping up the number of blog posts and how-to videos over the coming months. If there is something specific you would like us to address, leave a comment or send us a tweet.

In the meantime, here are a few do’s and don’ts we have put together based on questions from users. Feel free to add to the list.

Anchor Text

- Do use plenty of variations of your root key phrase.
- Do mix in commonly used generic anchor text like “click here” or “for more information”.
- Do build links for the “long-tail” terms.
- Don’t just use your “money” term over and over again or exclusively when building links.

Quantity and Velocity

- Do start slow, especially when promoting new sites.
- Do look at your competition. How many links are they obtaining per month? How often are they using the same anchor text?
- Don’t be a statistical outlier (see above!).
- Don’t build the same exact number of links month after month. Be random. Be natural.

Quality

- Do avoid links from sites with more ads than text.
- Don’t accept links from bad neighborhoods.
- Don’t accept links from sites with unreadable or spun content.
- Don’t get obsessed with PageRank.

On-Site

- Do make sure your site’s content is exceptional.
- Do link out to trusted sources.
- Don’t have more ads than content.
- Don’t link all of your site’s together.
- Don’t link out to bad neighborhoods.

Monitor and Adjust

- Do document every aspect of your link building strategy.
- Do make sure you are using some sort of web analytics.
- Do make continuous improvements to your site.
- Do make your own case studies.
- Don’t make major changes in your strategy with out supporting data.
- Don’t make unrealistic goals.
- Don’t rely only on third party research tools. Conduct your own studies for the best keywords and opportunities.

  • This is very helpful. I would love to see more detailed videos with tips and instruction on how to use the tool effectively

  • How many variations would be “idea” for our root phrase? Would 3 do it?

  • I think 3 is probably the minimum. I typically target 6 to 12 variations when possible for any moderately competitive phrase.
